How To Become A Driving Instructor

Start Your Journey

Whilst becoming a driving instructor may be appealing, as you can branch out into a new career and potentially be your own boss, it can also seem a little daunting. We’re here to support you and guide you every step of the way. Once you’re fully qualified, you can start your own business (we can help you set this up too), or you can join our franchise and let us do a lot of the running of the business for you.

To become a driving instructor there are three tests you need to pass:

  1. Part 1 is a theory and hazard perception test (much like the one learners do now).
  2. Part 2 is a driving standards test (much like the learner practical driving test).
  3. Part 3 is a teaching ability test where the trainee gives a lesson to a learner, with the examiner sat in the back of the car.

We offer three main driving instructor courses, along with CPD training if required.

Full Driving Instructor Training Course

Part 1 mentioned above is mostly self study, so our instructor course is 50 hours of training for the part 2 and part 3 tests. It is arranged as follows:

  • 14 hours Part 2 training

  • 24 hours Part 3 training

  • 12 hours Part 3 training with a learner in the car (learner driving, trainee instructing, qualified instructor in the back tutoring the trainee)

You are then eligible to take the part 3 test or go onto a Trainee Licence.

Trainee Licence Course

Once you’ve passed parts 1 and 2 and completed a minimum of 40 hours training, you can apply for the Trainee Licence. With a Trainee Licence, you can go out on your own teaching learners to drive, whilst continuing to gain experience and practice what you have learnt. However, to do this you must be sponsored by a driving school and complete an extra 20 hours of training.

We offer a franchise option with Shaun Day Driving School, and so can sponsor you with your Trainee Licence. Your Trainee Licence lasts for 6 months and you must pass your part 3 test within this period. (The Trainee Licence may be extended for a further 6 months in some circumstances.)

Earn while you learn – get paid for doing driving lessons.

Most of the big driving schools will force you to sign up for a minimum of 2 years. Our minimum contract is only 6 months, as we have confidence that you will stay because you’re very happy with the service provided!

Once Qualified

Once you’ve passed your part 3 test and are fully qualified, you can set up on your own or continue with your Shaun Day Driving School franchise. If you don’t want to be under Shaun Day Driving School’s brand franchise, you can choose to join the driving school network, where you can get help setting up your own business and operate under your own name. You can basically choose how much or how little support and help you want.

Standards Check Course

A qualified driving instructor will periodically get called up for a standards check. This is basically doing the part 3 test again. If you fail the standards check three times in a row, the DVSA will take your teaching licence away, so you can no longer be a driving instructor. Many instructors dread the standards check, so this is where the standards check training comes in.
